When an artist friend of Norberto Clemente‘s told him about The Big Show–an exhibit of 69 works by 61 artists at the Lawndale Art Center in Houston–Clemente was surprised. “I haven’t heard … much about art competitions in Houston,” Clemente says.

Clemente’s painting The Worship (2011) made the cut for the show, which received 915 submissions from 381 artists. Previously called the East End Show, the Big Show is an annual exhibit of works by “emerging and underrepresented Houston area artists,” according to the Lawndale website.
